Early 19th Century, Central Tibet
Painted on Wood
Mineral Pigments, Vegetal Dyes, Gesso

This lovely Tibetan table was once used by lamas to read religious scriptures and hold ritual implements. It boasts two charming zipak faces that loom out of the red background on the front. These protective creatures were beloved by the Tibetans for guarding treasures and sacred spaces, and were usually only found on monastic pieces. Also known as a kirthimukha, or “Face of Glory”, the zipaks are depicted gnawing on jewels, while their delicate hands poise holding onto floral branches. A flaming cluster of triple gems embellishes the sides of the table, while four-petal flowers, floral trails and cloud patterns cover the rest of the illustrated area.
